How do I copy a quiz from another course?

For a print (PDF) version of these instructions, click here.

You can copy a quiz, with all its preexisting settings, but this will also copy all question banks as well. You can ignore them, but if you already have a complex question bank structure in the new course, you might not want to do this. A second option is included below.

The easy option. This copies the quiz and all test banks (categories) into the new course

  1. In the course you are copying INTO, click Import in the Administration block.

  2. Find the course you want to copy from.

  3. Uncheck everything and then check only the quiz that you want to copy.

  4. Click Continue.

  5. Keep clicking "continue"or"next" through the copy process.

  6. The quiz will now be in the same content area of your new course that it was in the old course, so you may need to move it to a different content area.>

The harder option. If you don't want to import all test banks, you can export a single bank, import it into the new course, and then deploy the quiz. This takes a little more time, but keeps your new course's test banks "clean."

To copy only one quiz's questions:

  1. In the course you are copying FROM, click Questions in the administration block.

  2. Find the category(testbank)that you want to copy.

  3. Click the "Export" tab at the top.

  4. Select "Moodle XML format" as the file format.

  5. Click "Export questions to file."

  6. You will see a list of the questions. At the bottom of the page, click the "Click to download the exported category file" link and save the file to your desktop.

  7. In the course you are copying INTO,click Questions in the administration block.

  8. Click the Import tab at the top.

  9. Select "Moodle XML format" as the file format.

  10. Click the "Choose File" button and select the file from your desktop (it will probably be the only XML file on your desktop).

  11. Click "Upload this file."

  12. The questions will be listed. Click Continue at the bottom.

  13. The category will now be in the new course. Deploy the quiz as you normally would.

  14. Delete the file from your desktop since you will no longer need it.
