Private Jazz Piano Lessons

Jazz piano lessons offer students the opportunity to engage deeply with the theoretical, historical, and performative aspects of the jazz tradition. Lessons are structured to foster and adapt technical facility, stylistic fluency, and creative expression through improvisation and interpretation.

Areas of study include:

  • Harmonic and theoretical concepts such as the ii-V-I progression, blues scale, 12-bar blues form, and modes

  • Improvisational strategies informed by analysis of seminal recordings and transcriptions

  • Comping techniques using one- and two-hand chord voicings, rhythmic flexibility, playing solo, and ensemble interaction in small and large groups

  • Stylistic exploration across swing, bebop, blues, Latin jazz, contemporary jazz, funk, traditional jazz and more

  • Ear training, transcription, and a basic understanding of the repertoire

Through individualized instruction, students are encouraged to cultivate a personal artistic voice while situating their practice within the broader continuum of jazz performance and scholarship. Emphasis is placed on developing not only pianistic proficiency but also an intellectual and aesthetic engagement with the art form.
